TURKISH WINE TASTING IN LONDON

A Turkish Wine Tasting event was held in Sofra restaurant in Covent Garden, London on October 15, 2007, hosted by TasteAnatolia magazine in conjunction with the Turkish Ministry of Culture and Tourism. The evening was the first of its kind to bring together the leading wine producers of Turkey with the British wine press, wine merchants and wine experts.

TasteAnatolia Editor Marie-Pierre Moine said that Turkish food is getting increasingly popular in this country but Turkish wines are still barely known in Britain, and added that they wanted to redress the balance

Participating wine producers and their CEO/Owners were:
Buyulubag (Alp Toruner); Corvus (Resit Soley); Doluca (Sibel Kutman); Gestin (Inci Ozay), Kavaklıdere (Ali Basman), Kayra (Daniel O’Donnell), Melen (Osman Tokat), Pamukkale, and Sevilen (Enis Guner)

TasteAnatolia’s Wine Editor Andrew Catchpole chaired the tasting during which wines produced mostly from grapes varieties native to Turkey, such as Bogazkere, Narince, Kalecik Karasi, Okuzgozu were sampled. Catchpole said: “The event was an opportunity to showcase the modern face of Turkish wine and, without knowing quite what to expect,- many tasters were impressed by both the variety and overall standard of the wines. The tasting also represented a healthy new co-operation between Turkey’s leading producers, much needed if they are committed to making their presence felt on the UK wine scene.”

The tasting was followed by a cocktail party attended by Claudia Roden, Ross Burden, Peter McCombie MW, Willie Lebus, David Furer, Sara Jayne Stanes, Josceline Dimbleby, food and travel writers (The Times, House & Garden, Wine & Spirit), representatives from Harpers, and wine merchants met the wine producers as well as gourmets and journalists who had come from Turkey for the occasion, including Ahmet Ors, Mehmet Yasin, Osman Serim and Vedat Milor.

The Turkish Ambassador to London Yigit Alpogan, Consul-General Bahadir Kaleli and Turkish Culture and Tourism Office Director Sermin Ozduran also attended the event with many representatives of the Turkish business community in the UK.
Turkish Wine Presentation

tasteAnatolia dergisinin T.C. Kültür ve Turizm Bakanlığı ile  ortaklaşa düzenlediği ve Sofra ve Özer restaurant’ların sahibi Hüseyin Özer tarafından sponsorluğu yapılan “Turkish Wines 101” gecesi 15 Ekim 2007’de gerçekleştirildi.

Türk şarap üreticilerini İngiliz basını, şarap ithalatçıları ve şarap uzmanları ile bir araya getirmeyi amaçlayan geceye yüksek bir  katılım oldu. Katılımcılar arasında Claudia Roden, Ross Burden, Peter McCombie MW, Willie Lebus, David Furer, Sara Jayne Stanes, Josceline Dimbleby gibi tanınmış isimler yanısıra Times, House & Garden, Wine & Spirit, Harpers gibi magazin ve gazete temsilcileri ile Bibendum gibi İngiltere’ye şarap ithalatı yapan firmaların yetkilileri de vardı.  Ayrıca Türkiye’den Ahmet Örs, Mehmet Yaşin, Osman Serim ve Vedat Milor gibi tanınmış yazarlar da geceye katıldılar.

9 üretici firmanın şaraplarının tadılğı gecede üreticiler genellikle Boğazkere, Narince, Kalecik Karası, Öküzgözü gibi Türkiye’ye has üzümlerden yapılmış şarapları ile davetlilerin karşısına çıktılar.

tasteAnatolia dergisinin şarap editörü Andrew Catchpole tarafından yönetilen tadımdan sonra seyahat ve yemek yazarlarının da katıldığı bir kokteyl parti oldu. Kokteyl partiye Londra Büyükelçisi Yiğit Alpogan, Başkonsolos Bahadır Kaleli ve Türk Kültür ve Turizm Ofisi Direktörü Sermin Özduran da katıldılar.
