Mehmet Simsek, the Turkish State Minister for Economy, gave a speech on 21 October 2008 at a meeting hosted by the TBCCI in London where the Minister talked and answered questions about the Turkish economy the current financial and economic climate.

TBCCI at CNR 2008 Food Exhibition Istanbul
The TBCCI participated with a stand at the 16th International Food, Beverage, Food Ingredients and Food Processing Exhibition held at the CNR Expo centre between 5-8 November 2008.

UK-TURKEY TRADE DATA
In September 2008, export–import trade between the two countries declined by 4.1%. In the January-September nine months period, the cumulative increase over the same period last year became 9.5%.

NEWS IN BRIEF

Turkey and IMF
Turkey's government may sign an economic agreement with the International Monetary Fund worth between $20 billion and $40 billion. Turkey says reforms enacted under previous fund support packages have made it more resistant to crisis.

European Bank for Reconstruction and Development’s (EBRD)
The EBRD plans to invest up to US$ 600 million in Turkey by 2010. Investments will contribute to the development of Turkey's private sector and reach out to areas away from the large metropolitan centres. Click here for details

Exxon, TPAO Black Sea investment up to $450 mln
U.S. oil major Exxon Mobil and Turkey's state-owned petroleum firm TPAO signed an agreement to explore for oil in the sea, which lies to the north of Turkey to invest between $400-450 million in the first stage of oil exploration in the Black Sea Drilling is expected to begin by the end of 2009 or the start of 2010 if oil is found in the Black Sea, where officials estimate the volume of reserves at 10 billion barrels.

Toyota and Turkey
Toyota, the Japanese automotive giant, has chosen Turkey as its base for the production of light commercial vehicles over candidate countries like like China, Japan and Russia.

EU Shipping Conference Certification
From 18th October 2008, the EU has ended the anti-trust immunity that has until then allowed shipping lines to organise themselves into “conferences”. Consequently, from this date, the EU will not allow the issuance of certificates on EU routes in respect of the vessel belonging to a “conference line”. Click here for details.

Commodity Codes to classify goods for Export and Import.
Commodity codes are used to find import duties, taxes, tax rebates, reliefs, licences and special conditions such as prohibitions that may apply to particular goods. Businesses and individuals can use the electronic tariff on the Business Link website to classify their own goods.
