CHAMBER DINNER, 12 OCTOBER 2006
The TBCCI hosted a Ramadan fast-breaking dinner on 12 October 2006 attended by a large number Chamber members, businesspeople, diplomats, bankers and representatives of non-governmental organisations. In his opening speech, the Chairman of the TBCCI, Remzi Gur, drew attention to the importance of the strengthening of the unity of and the solidarity within the Turkish community in the UK, a subject that is also fundamental in facilitating integration with the local community.

Mr Gur said that the act of French Parliament that made the denial of the alleged Armenian massacre an offence under the French law had caused deep indignation of the entire Turkish community. He emphasised the need for the Turkish communities outside Turkey to focus on this matter, a development brought up during Turkey’s EU membership negotiations. Mr Gur stated that the act, regarded unacceptable by the Turkish people and the Chamber, has hurt Turkey-France relations. He added that the matter would be discussed during a meeting in the Parliament and asked for support from Chamber members and the business community.

MAYOR OF ISTANBUL's VISIT TO LONDON
Mr Kadir Topbas, Mayor of Istanbul visited London on the occasion of attending a conference on metropolitan issues, and gave an address at the Ramadan fast-breaking dinner of the Chamber on 25 October 2006. Mr Topbas stated that Istanbul has become one of the cities with highest migration reaching 1 million 320 thousand people in the last five years and that further migration would make it very difficult for Istanbul. Pointing to the ensuing problems in transportation and infrastructure, he said “This is not our fate; we know what is to be done”, and added that Istanbul is competing with other big cities of the world, and that was why they were drawing on the experience of these major metropolitans. The Mayor described a project of 32 new tunnels aiming to reroute 600 thousand vehicles underground to ease Istanbul’s congestion and explained privatising as the solution to the funding problems of the municipality.Click here to view photos
